barcode fails with MMP?

Older mass market paperbacks have their ISBN barcode inside the front cover, rather than on the back. I thought that's what the issue was here. It didn't work for some reason.
Could the barcode reader recognize that a book is MMP and tell the user to try the front cover?

bibliomouse Hmmm, I think the barcode scanner was having some issues more generally around this time. Did you try other non-MMP books at the same time that worked?
Nadia yes right before that I tried a different book entirely but I can't remember which it was. Maybe I was right at the beginning of the outage 😅
I did think it was a bigger issue, I just wondered about MMP specifically
