Some reviews contain spoilers. It would be nice to hide these, or report them for hiding.
How would you all like this feature to work?
Nadia it would be great to report the review so the poster has the opportunity to amend it to include the proper spoiler tag where the text is hidden. In the mean time the review would remain hidden? Just an idea
Nadia I imagine something like if a review is reported a flag pops up or the review is hidden saying "this review may contain spoilers" and you can choose to click to see? And the user who wrote the review gets a notification so they can add proper spoiler tags.
Nadia how I imagined the feature:
Next to any review is either a 3 dots menu or a direct button to report that a review contains uncovered spoilers. This would bring up a confirmation dialogue for user to confirm that the review contains plot spoilers which aren't already covered by spoiler blocks. This dialogue could also contain or link to some short guidance about what counts as a spoiler and what doesn't, but this part might not be necessary.
If one user reports a review, the back end records this and who made the report. The entire review is then covered by a single spoiler block with a message at the top - "This review has been marked by users as containing spoilers."
The review author would then receive a notification letting them know that one of their reviews has been marked as containing spoilers, clarifying that users will still be able to see their review, but will need to click a spoiler block to see it. There should be a "To avoid this in the future" short explanation of using spoiler blocks, or a link to one. This notification should have an option to submit a ticket if a) the user believes this marking was incorrect/in error OR b) they have edited their review to either remove spoilers, or add a spoiler block around any relevant parts. The ticket could then be reviewed by librarians as and when they have time, as a low priority ticket since the review is still available to read and there are no negative consequences for the review author. When reporting, the form could show two options to select. For type a "I don't think this review contains spoilers" and for b "I've edited my review and it no longer contains uncovered spoilers"
If a librarian reviews a ticket they can remove the user marking if it's no longer needed. Potentially, type a tickets could go to senior team rather than just any librarian.
If a review from a type a ticket is found to have not contained spoilers, this could be marked on the reporting user so librarians can see if this user has falsely flagged multiple reviews. This would hopefully not be needed much as I can't imagine huge amounts of abuse of this feature, but it would allow librarians/the team to reach out if a user is repeatedly reporting reviews for spoilers to explain why they don't count, or in the case of malice set a flag so that this users reports do not automatically cover reviews any more.
Nadia Personally, I think it would be great if we could click a "report spoiler" button and then be able to highlight a portion that is the spoiler (sometimes the whole review isn't a spoiler so don't necessarily need to immediately hide it all, but just a portion), whether it then gets reviewed by the original writer, one of the StoryGraph team, or just stays marked
kpwxx I agree. Definitely should work as a "hide immediately as a spoiler" until proven otherwise. Even with abuse someone could still click through and view it anyways with the extra step
Echoing everyone else— I’ve run into no less than five spoilers. Now I typically hold off reading any reviews until I’ve finished a book, but sometimes there are valid reasons to go in there. Stumbling upon a spoiler is infuriating!
This is still very much needed! Just popped in to see the reviews at the halfway mark of reading a book to see if my views aligned with others out of curiosity... First review I look at spoils the death of a very major character and I am quite upset. It would be great to be able to flag these reviews so no one else has this same experience for a comment that is very obviously a spoiler
lizthescaredycat just happened to me today too... Ugh!
Agreed. The last two books that I read had major spoiler reviews by other users. On more social sites, we can comment to educate the reviewer about spoiler tags. Here, it would be nice to be able to just flag a review that isnt using spoiler markup as having spoilers so that people looking for books can choose to skip or reveal that review's complete text.
cassandrat worse is the people who literally do not care and blatantly spoil it because they didnt like the book. There has to be a way the community can flag something as a potential spoiler so someone has to click to read it and not accidentally see it!
Absolutely, this is needed! I've seen several reviews that spoil major emotional events in the book by revealing something that should be tucked away in the content warning section. (Example: those numerous obnoxious reviews that just say "One star the dog dies.") I would love a way to flag these reviews so they can be hidden, or even just to alert the poster to please use spoiler tags. Any idea when this will be rolled out?
slovenlymuse No idea. Would be nice for this year but got a bunch of other things to prioritise. For now, you can email in to support@thestorygraph.com to report. Sorry for the spoilers and the inconvenience.
I just read a review while reading my book that fully spoils the entire plot twist. There's no way to report reviews for spoilers or even abuse?
dani4a You have to contact us via the app or email us at support@thestorygraph.com for now. So sorry this happened!
Yes, we will eventually have this built in!
Nadia It got more important now that we can see reviews directly one our community tab, or at least the first sentences. My eyes just can´t not read them and sometimes there are spoilers or my brain assumes half of the story very quickly.
helena_buchwelt Noted!
Nadia We also got a little discussion on this in the librarian discord in case you have not seen it yet, in the feedback forum.
Yes, we really need this! I just looked at the reviews after finishing a book and someone mentioned a main character death in the first sentence. Fortunately I didn't look at the reviews before I started reading or I would have been heartbroken! Would love some way to notify them so they can use the spoiler tag.
