Immersive Reading (Multiple Formats With Overlap)

I’ve been getting into immersive reading more and listening to the audiobook while following along with the physical/digital text. However, when it comes to tracking my progress I usually have to choose either the print or the audio format, and I don’t want it categorized as a re-read or as two books added to my monthly/yearly total.

It would be cool to be able to mark that I’m reading the print and audio formats for the same book in such a way that I can have them both added to my pages read/minutes listened and formats stats - but only count it as one book towards my goal.

I have found a workaround for this! Assuming you:

  • want to count 100% of minutes AND 100% of pages for a book, and only have it count as one book
  • want to count minutes and pages that cover the same section of book (ie reading and listening to the first 15% in tandem)
  • want stats to show both minutes and pages counted
  • you can either log them both daily if you want to have day stats/streak, OR you can just log once at the end to mark them both as 100%.
  • You can also backdate entries if needed for this, just make sure you're adding the same percentages to the same day on both formats

Steps:

  1. set "currently reading" on first format of book and update amount read. using percentage is clearest but can also log time/pages and it will convert to percentage.
  2. go to book page and choose "view editions"
  3. find the other format you want and choose "switch to this edition" (all tags, progress, etc will be kept)
  4. see what percentage your first entry got you to, then log that same percentage. it will look like nothing changed
  5. if you want to verify, go to the reading entries for the book and you can see on that day you have minutes and pages logged for the same % amounts
  6. when done with the book, set one format to 100%, swap to the other format, and mark as 100%
  7. make sure you're on the format you want to count as the final book (audio/digital/physical) and mark as finished.
  8. ta da!

If you don't care about daily tracking, you can just set first edition to 100%, swap to 2nd and set to 100%, then mark as finished.

Posted this on reddit as well so can check there for any other comments/discussion if other folks find issues or have other recs, not sure if a link here will work but I'll try (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheStoryGraph/comments/1o350om/howto_for_tracking_100_of_pages_and_minutes_for/)

I can't wait until this feature gets added! I read like this a lot.

Came to the roadmap to see if this request had been added, and I’m happy to see that it has! I just recently started immersive reading and am really enjoying it! But haven’t figured out the best way to track. Would love a feature to help this!

I know it's on the someday list, but I read almost exclusively with multiple formats and I cannot WAIT for this to be trackable with the app.

Just adding my vote for bumping this up the pipeline (and following). I do almost exclusively immersive so every month I have to do my own calculations since my pages/hours are never correct.

noladawnreads I would also absolutely love if this was moved up on the timeline.

Nadia is there an updated timeline for when immersion reading will be available on the app?

ebbookworm There isn't! While I see a future where we will support this, it's not something that'll be a priority soon. When there is an update you'll get automatically notified through this post and the other related one.

Nadia for right now, I mark both editions I’m reading as 100% when I’m finished to count all pages/minutes, and then I mark one as did not finish. When the immersion reading feature is available, can we have something that makes it easier to move some of these did not finish books over to the Immersion feature? For example, my 2022 reading wrap-up said that I had 26 books marked as did not finish when they really were immersion books.

ebbookworm We can't commit to having a way to change historic data for something that'll be a completely new feature and where we have no idea how it'll be implemented, but we always try to do what we can to make the transition easier for people.

I agree! I would love this feature as well. Just a note: I often read a same simultaneously in paperback and digital. So allowing that combination in addition to the audio-text pairings would be lovely.

Yeah this would be amazing especially since the audiobook hours tracking has been improved it would be great to accurately track it!

I've played around with the book I'm currently reading via audio/digital. I'm able to mark both formats as Currently Reading and track progress, but when I finish the book there is no way to only mark one book as Read without deleting my progress on the other book. If I choose the option to Remove Book, it deletes all progress from my stats. Technically, I could set one book to DNF to keep the progress, but then it gets removed from my shelves, which is not ideal either.
