Barcode scanner keeps camera on and doesn’t prompt user to ask for camera access

  1. When I first tried to use the barcode scanner I thought it was broken. Turns out that I needed to allow access to my camera in my phone settings. Normally an app will prompt me to do this, so that’s why I thought it was broken.

  2. Once I got the scanner working I noticed that after I stopped using the scanner it still kept my phone camera turned on. The iPhone now has an indicator light to tell you when your camera is on and that light stayed on even after I closed out the scanner. The only way to turn off the camera completely was to fully exit the app.

This is not regular behaviour.

First, the app should prompt you in-app and it does for most people. I can't work out why for some it doesn't. Can you please do me a favour and go and turn off cameara permissions for StoryGraph and then force quit the app and try and use the barcode scanner. Does it now prompt you? I have a feeling it won't, but even when testing I'd do this on both iOS and Android and it would ask me again!

  1. This I've had a couple people express and again it's strange as I've set up the scanning software to deactivate if the modal has been closed.

I'll have to look into this more closely when past the New Year rush and after having delivered a couple other features.

Nadia I tried and it had the same problems I had as the first time. No prompt and then when I turn it on in my phone settings my iPhone camera stays on.

Nadia removing the app and the redownloading it fixed the issue for some reason.

madlamb How strange! Okay, thank you for this experiment. I'm really sorry it's behaving this way for you.

This happened the first time I used the barcode scanner on the iPhone too. Hasn’t happened since, but I still get prompted every time for camera access.

sequelmage And this also shouldn't happen. Seems to be an iOS specific one this one.
