There is no link to import a book using its ISBN anymore.

As someone who reads a fair chunk of academic-y stuff that is either obscure, in a foreign language, or both, being able to add by ISBN was a huge help for me because I have to import the books I read on a regular-ish basis. Right now, for example, the translation of Boethius's "On the Consolation of Philosophy" I read isn't in the database. I hope the new solution for automation isn't purely based on publisher participation...I don't think that would be of much help in my case 😅

We've removed that feature from the app!

Nadia So what are we supposed to do now?

vaz_ar Manually add books — when you click to add an edition via the editions page, a lot of fields are already filled out — and as we're growing more books are being added by users. We're also going to work on a feed for publishers to add in their libraries in advance.

Nadia That does not really address the use case of scanning ISBNs and wanting to import books based on that though

vaz_ar The point is that needing to add in books via ISBN scanning should become a rarity. Still, we're reviewing the decision we have made based on the feedback.

Nadia Another vote against sunsetting this feature! Adding via ISBN 13 is the only way to reliably track comics via Storygraph without manually adding each one. Manual add is both time consuming and prone to human error, screwing with reporting.

Nadia I also went to look for this feature today and was surprised to find it missing. I'm surprised that y'all would move away from an automated system and towards something that requires a huge amount of manual input. As mycatmycatandme said, it took me a bunch of time to input all the data for the book I was trying to add and the first time I tried to submit it, it didn't like that I forgot to remove the hyphen from the USB, and it deleted a bunch of the data that I had manual input, including the cover. So I had to recheck every single field to make sure that the data that I had already put in once was actually still there before submitting.

jaina8851 We wouldn't get rid of a feature without good reason. We will be moving towards other automated systems that involves book data moving in the opposite direction and eventually the need for users to manually add editions will be massively reduced. Separately, we need to improve the UX of manually adding books.

Nadia I don't dispute that from a developer's perspective there may be a good reason for removing this feature, but the fact is that you are shifting the work from the app to the users, who now have manually do what was previously automated. You are talking about future features that will make things easier, but in the meantime the app is much less usable than it was before.

vaz_ar We wouldn't get rid of a feature that makes the lives of some users a lot better without good reason.
