Missing Pub Info when original date of publication is 0 & can save negative number
Mar 20, 2024
Issue: Running into an issue where the book will say "missing pub info" but then when expanded it has all of the information. This prevents it from displaying in order when sorting books by publication date.
Cause: In the book edit, the original publication date is set to 0, which seems to cause the issue as once I updated it, it loaded correctly and showed in the sorted results as expected.
Reco: only show "missing pub info" alert when the fields that display under it are incomplete for that edition. ISBN, format, language, publisher, date published.
edit - see comment, but can also save negative numbers as year of originally published date that this pulls from
Comments
this seems to be only when the "original publication date/year" field is empty, though the UX is confusing here.
additional note that you can save negative numbers in this field both manually entered and with the caret dropdowns. Reco making this a year specific dropdown instead of a straight numeric one, similar to what you choose when entering a birth date year for example.
jenniferforjoy Yes, am aware of this! I made an intentional decision at the time, re the missing original pub year, knowing it wasn't the best UX, but also knowing it was a key field used for the pub year sorting, and thinking that it was unlikely to not be filled out if everything else was, etc. Alas, that's proven not to be the case. It's definitely a neglected piece of UX that needs working on.
