Even if we are "friends" and follow each other, I can't seem to add specific users to buddy reads.

Even if we are "friends" and follow each other, I can't seem to add specific users to buddy reads.
You need to make sure that you've all got the appropriate buddy read settings! The default for who can invite you to a buddy read is 'nobody'.
The settings can be found on the Preferences page.
