Not sure if this is still relevant, but would it be possible to have the barcode scanner automatically add the book to a tag, owned books and a shelf? If we were in the right location in the app?
aftereliza Not the right place, but we will definitely offer the scanner in more places in the future! Double check if there's a post for your specific case in general and if not, add it!
In case it’s helpful for anyone else: I wasn’t getting prompted to allow camera access, nothing happened when I clicked on the barcode symbol, but it’s working now that I manually allowed camera access in my phone settings. If it’s not working for you, check the phone settings for the app!
mycatmycatandme Yeah, we've had a few people report this. It should prompt you within the app but it isn't for everyone. Thank you for posting this.
So excited about the new feature!! Just wanted to let you know that it is not working for me 😔 (android app, version 1.12) . I can see the icon in the search bar, but nothing happens when I press it.
Same for when I go to the 'owned books' section and try to add a book there: nothing happens. The button does turn blue, to indicate it's been clicked, but the camera doesn't open...
At first I thought I might not have given the app the correct permissions, but when I check my settings it says 'no authorisations required' and can't seem to add any permissions.
Oh and Merry Christmas btw!
emvdw You need to be on version 1.13! :-D
(And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too!)
Nadia haha! I updated and of course it's working now, yay!
emvdw Yay!!
I just tried to add two of my books and the scanner did not pick up the isbn number correctly multiple times. both books are in the system when I manually typed in the isbn
leigh9192 Hello! I've recently pushed an update to improve the scanner configuration, which should help. Also, it looks like the book does need to be quite close to the camera!
Be sure to update to the latest version of your app to try it!
Nadia yey, and congrats!!
Nadia It's everything I wanted for Christmas! ❤️
Nadia not sure if it's just me or other android users as well but I've tried scanning 3 barcodes and the camera doesn't seem to focus, it stays blurry and isn't able to scan.
ttwyman Hello! Yes, we've had some issues, mainly with Android users, but not all, and I've been working on them all day. Just pushed one final update, which I hope helps. Does it? (Refresh/force quit first).
Nadia I’m an iPhone user with the latest 17.2.1 update and when I scan it gives me a random jumble of numbers for the ISBN. I’ve tried multiple books in various lights both before and after the 8:20 am PST update push. I don’t have an issue with blurriness.
rewildling Strange! What happens when you force quit the app? Can you send a screen recording to support@thestorygraph.com. Thank you!
Nadia okay. I sent an email. Thanks for reaching out quickly.
Nadia I have this problem too. Out of focus and not scanning, on Android. I updated several hours ago and the app store indicates I'm on 1.13 and up to date. Lmk if there's any data I can collect for you!
Nadia no I still seem to be having the same problem
sassmistress This should be fixed now!
ttwyman This should be fixed now!
Nadia its no longer blurry but for some reason it not detecting any numbers
ttwyman Be sure to force quit and we've found that having the camera very close to the book works well!
Nadia I tried uninstalling it but having it very close to the barcode makes it blurry
Nadia Yessssss got a working scan! Thank you! This is a game changer for me!!
ttwyman Okay, can you perhaps try further out and moving it slowly in? Not ideal, and wouldn't be how we'd leave things, but I want to see if that maps what I saw on my sister's Android phone yesterday.
sassmistress Yayyy!!!
Any news on this for Android?
ttwyman It's not live for anybody but the plan is for iOS and Android to be released at the same time.
Nadia oh right, I totally misunderstood the Instagram story then
ttwyman Hehe. It's on my phone (and Rob and Abbie's), but not on anyone else's! Really want it out this week. 🤞🏾
Nadia oooh lucky you guys.
Looking forward to whenever its available then 😁
ttwyman Finally Android is working!
Pushing a new version of the app to the Play Store now.
Hopefully they don't take forever to approve it, especially during this holiday period... 🤞🏾
Nadia Yay! Thank you to the team giving updates all the time. So appreciated 💖
Nadia oooh awesome thank you for keeping me updated, I'll keep an eye out for it
Please!
This would be delightful, especially for adding my home library to my owned books
This would be a great feature! Hard to find the right edition of a book (but better than Goodreads!).
This would be really helpful. 🩷
I can't wait for this! I'd love to be able to quickly add things to my "owned" list.
rosiem Hopefully coming this year!! 🤞🏾
Can’t wait!!
I just got a scanner, this would be great!
Ooh, this feature will be wonderful! Can’t wait for it!
Yes please!! Very excited for this.
I’m really looking forward to this feature.
This would be fantastic! Especially for imputing our existing physical books.
I am new to StoryGraph, but I have stopped using Goodreads and only use this app now. I would love this feature and can't wait for it to go live.
I'll be so excited when this goes live. Will be the best way to add the physical books I have to my TBR.
Will this only be barcode reading or will it be able to bring up a book by image recognition as well?
This is focused on barcode reading only, unless the API to scan barcodes comes with book cover image recognition built in!
Nadia you might be able to modify the Google Vision API for book covers, it maybe could leverage the OCR text detection instead of book covers.
Also could be useful if not overkill for barcodes as it would read the numbers instead of the bars.
Google Vision API
es06x Thank you for the tip!
Yay! This makes me happy.
It's because of my current customer interview round, which I thank you for being a part of! 3 or 4 of the 8 have mentioned it at this point as something they'd really love!
This would be a great feature to have! Looking forward to having it implemented.
I’m so excited for this feature. I love going into book stores and just scanning everything I want to read. Being able to do this with the barcode on the back instead of typing out the numbers would be handy.
Yes! This is great! I often do this in bookstores when I see something I am interested in and want to quickly see reviews or add to my TBR.
Much easier to scan the ISBN rather than looking for the version of the book you have or type the ISBN by hand!
I would really love this featurethithisfeaturefeature
this is a very useful feature
I used this all the time on goodreads. It was very helpful and added an extra bit of fun when adding the next book you're reading.
This will be a great feature to have one day when we can go back into bookstores and I can't buy everything but I CAN save everything to my to-read list!
