Last year I accidentally set my book and page challenges comically low, underestimating just how much I would read in 2021. By the time I migrated from GR to The StoryGraph, I had already met both goals (lol).
This is the first year that I'm starting the year on TSG, and I'm finding the "Nothing to worry about but..you are behind by 89 pages." messaging a little bit stressful! I finished the year by trying to read as much as possible to see just how high my counts could be, and I'm trying to relax this year, so seeing those nudges is making me feel like I need to rush or hurry or treat reading like a chore just to meet a goal.
I would love the ability to hide those messages on the Challenges page (which I visit constantly, since I'm use those to set up queues for my TBR), and perhaps reveal them with a click or a hover so that I don't feel edgy about being behind my goal four days in to the year.
The option to toggle progress updates on and off is now available for both the reading and pages goal!
Yes, this is something we've been saying we'll offer for a while now. We're also considering turning off the progress updates in general for the first handful of days in a New Year.
We were just going to have a toggle checkbox on the create/edit page (e.g. show me a progress statement). Turning them back on would be a couple clicks. Would that be okay?
If you do turn them off, could you make that an option, so that slackers who need the push can leave them ON? I only joined 2 challenges this year, Read the World and Onboarding, and having the progress updates showing helped motivate me to have them both finished with a scant 359 days left in the year.
Hehe! Maybe if we had the toggle option we wouldn't need to turn them off for the first few days of the year any longer.
I'm not sure what you mean by a toggle checkbox on the create/edit page (that is, I don't know what the create/edit page is in regards to challenges, if I'm not the owner of that challenge). To be a little more clear, the progress bar itself isn't stressing me out, just the language underneath it that is telling me that I'm behind. If there were a way to toggle hiding/showing that, so I could opt in to seeing it when I want to, that would be amazing!
That's exactly what's coming! The only place that sentence appears is on StoryGraph's annual reading and pages goal. I'm proposing that when you go to set the goal, or edit it, there'll be a checkbox that says something like: "let me know how far ahead or behind I am/always show a progress update".
