Author names in different languages

Since author names appear differently in different languages, it would probably be good to consolidate different versions under one - so it would appear during search regardless of its spelling (e.g. whether it's Jo Walton (English), Джо Уолтон (Russian) or whatever it looks like in, for example, Chinese).
Right now if I search for Джо Уолтон, I won't get any hits, but if I search for her book "Среди других" (Among Others) - I will. So, aside from gathering various spelling/languages under one heading, it might be also prudent to display the author's name in the language the book is under.

Just to add to this… could we also have “aliases” for author names?
This would be good for pen names, the same name in different languages, of course, but also different versions of the same name within the same language. For instance, some books by an author are published under their first and last name while others under first, middle and last.
In all these instances, the variations show up as different authors for me which messes with the stats and makes finding other books by that author harder.
