It would be great if the csv export of user data had a distinct column for author last name, or listed [Last name, First name] so that the sheet could be sorted alphabetically by author.

You can generate a column yourself after the export, if you insert a new column to the right of the author category (one or multiple depending on the number of authors your titles have) and with Google Sheets select "Split text to columns" and use the space " " separator.
aftereliza Good tip, though it doesn't work that well with multiple authors, authors with middle names, and Sinophone/Korean/Japanese authors whose family name comes first.
