My partner just asked me "when did we read Children of Time?" I knew I obvs had that info in StoryGraph and thought it would be easy to find. Instead, it took me multiple minutes to find the answer. I think this was made more difficult because I currently have a paperback edition of this book Paused, and we had read the audiobook, but I just want to explain all of the steps that I had to go through to find the answer. I put numbers on the screenshots in case they get uploaded out of order.
-
Search for Children of Time. Unsurprisingly, this brought me to the Paused edition, since that was the most recent one that I interacted with.
-
Go to the Editions page for the book.
-
I scrolled down through the editions. Every single one of them says "You've paused reading another edition" despite the fact that I ALSO "have read" another edition. Additionally, all of them say "5.0 ⭐ see review". I scroll to the first audio version, thinking this was the one I had read. I completely missed the fact that the "to read" button was still visible on that edition until I was writing this up.
-
Click through. Nope, this isn't the edition I read, apparently.
-
I decide to filter by Audio to see if that helps. Now, strangely (though helpfully), the repeated "You've paused reading another edition" and "5.0 ⭐ see review" annotations are gone. I still have to scroll down through the list to find what I hope is the edition I actually read.
-
Finally, I have landed on the actual book with my data and I'm able to drill into the menus to find the answer, since I read this book multiple times, and the Finished date isn't the one I was looking for.
This was a LOT of steps, with a lot of confusing and inconsistent UX in the meantime. I just double checked, and the edition that I have paused does say "You have read this book 2 times", but that isn't clickable, and there is no way to get a consolidated view into read dates.
What I really would love, when I do finish the paperback (hopefully before he puts out the next book next month 🤞), is for it to be easy to see all three of these reads in one place. It would be really cool to be able to click "You have read this book 3 times" and see:
Mar 2019 🎧
Dec 2019 🎧
2/2/25-2/5/26 📖
But more generally, I just find the editions page incredibly difficult to use with the recent changes to show everything on every edition. I understand why that change was made, and I know it helps certain use cases, but it makes other ones really difficult.
Right now I'm in between work on the book panes and there's a current bug with edition status display, so hopefully the difficulties are resolved once I've fixed the bug and completed this work. This is hopefully happening this week.
