Immersive Reading (Multiple Formats/No Overlap)

My apologies if this has been posed before. I often read a digital version of a book alongside the audio book version. But there doesn’t seem to be a way for me to track that immersive reading process.

Nadia It seems the post you linked to (I commented on that some time ago) and ebbookworm have a similar, if not the same, process. But mine is slightly different in the sense that there is little to no overlap between formats for me and it is important for me to track which parts of the book I consumed in which format. I do like the idea of the user being able to determine how much overlap there is. I would also add that I would like the ability to say where in the text that overlap occurs, if it occurs at all. I hope this makes sense.
I’m not sure which post about this to reply on but wanted to be another person affirming I’d like this feature. I only ever go back and forth between two or sometimes even all three formats (aka I never listen WHILE reading at the same time, so it would only be like digital 1-3%, audio 4-12%, etc. No overlap).
My ideal system would be some way to acknowledge that I’m reading multiple formats of the same book. And then while I update my progress (the total percent I am now at), I’d like a dropdown (or something) to select if that last sitting was audio, digital, or print. I’d then want my stats/streaks to appropriately calculate pages vs minutes even though it’s the same book. I’d personally love an addition to the format graph where it might be like this:
If people never choose to acknowledge that they’re reading multiple formats, their graph would just stay as it is now with the three main formats.
I know it’s complicated but there’s my dream! I do this kind of often. Right now I log the book as whatever format I primarily read and accept that my stats aren’t completely accurate. I also have custom tags/a custom chart for the variations of format combos.
kamrynkoble I always want to hear people's dreams! https://buttondown.com/nodunayo/archive/48-please-tell-us/
just adding another voice to the requests for this one :)
I’m glad I found this post! I was trying to think of how to word it because this is a feature I would also use all the time. I also switch between formats, usually reading my kindle at night but listening to audiobooks when I drive. It would be awesome to still have the pages read count towards my page goal and my audio count towards the hours goal!
saoirse_edits There is already a post about this (posted by me, actually). It's titled" immersion reading." This feature is not available yet, but I figured out of workaround. Here's how you can ensure that both you're Pages and minutes are counted without duplicating a book in your reading Challenge:
I hope this helps.
ebbookworm We've also got another Immersive Reading post that is about reading them simultaneously. Trying to think of the best way to merge/reword the titles across all three posts. Maybe it's all one type of behaviour — so I merge all three — with the user choosing how much overlap there is between formats?
Hi ebbookworm
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, while we seem to be using the same terminology, we are describing two very different reading processes. (See my comment on this post for clarity). I'm glad you've found a system that works for you. Unfortunately for me, this way would count each page twice which would mess up my pages read and dnf stats.
But thank you for offering your perspective. Much appreciated.

saoirse_edits Yes, the main thing I want to know is which terminology to use for what as right now they're both under "Immersive Reading" and that'll be confusing. I reckon I'll merge them all into one and it's just this idea of reading multiple formats at once, either with no overlap or 100% overlap..
Nadia I’m the type of person that listens to audio in the car and reads a digital book in bed (picking up where I left off, of course)… I’ve been calling it “tandem reading”
A way to track how much of the book I listened to vs read would be cool.
silvfere Did you see this version? Immersive Reading (Multiple Formats With Overlap)
For clarity sake, I’m not talking about listening to the audiobook and reading the digital version simultaneously. Instead, I pick up in one version wherever I left off in the other. So, if listened to chapters 1-3 on audiobook during my commute, I would start chapter 4 in the digital edition on returning home. I want to be able to track which pages I read in which format. The problem is: In my “read books” stats,I want both formats represented but I don’t want the book itself to count as read twice.
I recognize this is a highly specific situation and might not be easy, or even practical, to accommodate. But I thought I’d share just in case there are others who do the same or if you are able to do this.
Thank you!
saoirse_edits there is another post here about tracking partial reads, eg reading Chapters 3 and 5 of a textbook which students/academics often do. That could tie into your scenario, so you can track the parts read in different editions separately
saoirse_edits I'm glad I found this! Also sorry if there is a more updated solution to this now. I don't always switch back and forth between audio and physical, but sometimes I'll start something on audio and realize I'm missing information (or maybe don't like the narrator) so I decide to switch to physical (or vice versa) and there is no way for me to put a starting page number different from Page 1 when switching tracking to the physical form so it will show up in my page numbers read as being off since I didn't read page 1-150, I only read page 92-150. (Very similar to the other comment from iaraya about students tracking partial reads in a way, since they would also have to input a different first page kind of thing)
---- UPDATE (I processed while writing this): I'm going to keep playing with the journal entry edit data to see if I can get the result I'm looking for. I think there may be a way to maintain my overall tracked progress with the percent completed but still only record the correct pages read in last siting and total pages read count... Maybe... 2024 will be the year of trial. I also don't mind counting an audiobook as DNF in this case or if I am switching back and forth with physical at home and audio in the car/work then I'm also okay counting both as completed (so long as the minutes listened and pages are recorded.) I keep track of my own books read, and even Goodreads usually gets this number wrong with DNFs and such.
toric90 I've recently played around with this and was able to manipulate my read minutes in an audiobook and read pages in a physical book to properly reflect progress in both AND correct format of reading logged for each day. It is a little extra effort, but it works for me.
If you don't want both versions recorded in your "finished books" statistics or your DNF statistics - I've tried this and it worked - you can select one of the formats and mark it as "finished" but then delete the finished date. Storygraph will notice it as "read" but it will not be included in your annual statistics (I've done this for physical copies I own but have read the audiobook of) - however your read time will still be reflected in both the journal and stats pages.
toric90 Oooh smart! Thanks!
