now it seems that in order to add a past date started and finished, you need to add the book as read and then go to edit end dates. you then have to delete the blank one or the one with only an end date.

The interface here does seem a bit clunky. I'm slowly duplicating some of my Goodreads data here as I attempt to clean that up in the process. If I have a book that I started in December 2018 and finished in February 2019, then when I mark the book as read, I can only update the finish date. If I want to include both the start and end dates, then I have to add a reread, mark those dates, then delete the original one. It's just a clunky UX when I could have the option to update start and finish dates after marking a book as read.

You can edit the start date from when you mark a book as currently-reading. Then once you mark it as read, today's date gets added for the finish date.

If you're not in the habit of marking books as CR, you could just do it for a min before you mark it as read, that way you can put in the start date and the finish date will be autofilled when you then mark it read!
