I'm trying to be much more careful about adding the correct edition of the book I'm reading (number of pages, physical/digital etc) than I did on Goodreads. but I've had at least one instance where the edition I'm not reading has information I want to track but the edition I'm reading doesn't but has different information I also want to track. In this case it's an anthology where the edition I'm reading lists only the editor but has the correct media type and page count while the other edition in Storygraph lists all the authors but contains almost no other information (no page number, no media type, but does have the year of publication). I'm a little frustrated by the suggestion to search other editions to see if they have the information I want before putting in a request to fix missing information because it means I have to prioritize which stat(s) I want to be accurately tracked.
FWIW, I really appreciate it when all the authors in an anthology are listed. It makes the authors read tracking more useful and can also alert me to anthologies I didn't know a favored author contributed to.
Hi. I come across a lot of books with multiple editions on StoryGraph. Sometimes it's unclear if these are duplicates or truly different editions (and more often than they're not linked together - not listed as editions of each other). But in either case, when I search for a book I really only want to see it appear once in the search results. Likewise, I generally would prefer the reviews for a book to be grouped together under a "parent" entry for the book, rather than be attached to an edition. It's true that sometimes editions can have significant differences from one another, of course, but this is quite rare???
In general, I almost 100% find it unhelpful for each edition to show up individually in the UI rather than somehow being listed under a parent entry (or editions list) for those that really want to zero in on a particular edition.
(And, overall, thanks for a great app - am really appreciating StoryGraph.)
edww You should only see multiple editions of the same book on the editions list. If you're seeing duplicates elsewhere it means the books have not been merged into the correct book family. Book data is one of the hardest components of starting a company in this space and it's why we have our volunteer librarians helping out where they can. If you can, you click on "Report missing/incorrect book information..." on a book's page where you see duplicates in the search results. Otherwise, know that this element is being worked on every day and will eventually be spick and span!
Nadia Thanks! And I've reached out about becoming a volunteer librarian to help merge things, etc.
Hello! I'm not sure what the ask/suggestion is here. All of the editions should have accurate information, so whether that's adding in missing information (which all users can do for things like page count, format via the "Add missing information..." link), or requesting changes to information (which users can ask librarians to do via the "Report missing/incorrect information..." link), or switching editions, you shouldn't have to sacrifice any stats/data.
In the example you've stated in your post, it sounds like you either need to file a book ticket asking for all of the authors to be added to your edition or file a book ticket stating that there are two editions of the same anthology on the app and they can be merged. Most requests are fulfilled within days.
With respect to the data not always being there from the get-go, that's a pain point of being a new, growing books startup! It's hard to find accurate information, hence our volunteer librarian programme.
Let me know if I've misunderstood your post!
Nadia Hi Nadia, I totally understand being a small site and I certainly don't expect perfect information for books.
I'm sorry, I don't see an add information link. I can see the link under editions for add edition and I can see the link under Book Information for Report missing/incorrect information.
I had interpreted "Make sure to check, via the book's editions page, that a version of the book with the details you're looking for doesn't already exist on the site" to mean if another edition has the information you're looking for you should change to that edition rather than filing a ticket. But it sounds like that's not how it was intended so this thread can probably be deleted except that I'd appreciate it if you could point me to the Add missing information link. I'm happy to add the information myself, I just didn't realize it was a possibility.
Thanks!
schnaucl Hello! There's absolutely nothing to apologise for! :-D
Where you should see the "Add missing information..." link is where the "Report missing/incorrect information..." link is, so if you don't see it for a given book, that means that there's no missing information that a general user has the ability to fill in. Here's a little info on what sort of things a user can fill in: https://roadmap.thestorygraph.com/requests-ideas/posts/ability-to-complete-missing-info-when-importing-via-isbn. You can't add in authors, for example.
In these cases, you'll have to submit a ticket, and the ticket can say anything: there's a duplicate of this edition on the site, this edition doesn't have all of the contributors listed (like another one in the app does), etc..
The goal is for the data on StoryGraph to be absolutely perfect, so you definitely don't have to put up with an edition with incomplete info. However, we do see people filing a ticket and requesting changes to an edition (that's not in fact their edition), when their edition is already on the site, and in some cases has all of the information. That's what we mean when we say: check your edition doesn't already exist.
Even if your edition exists and has all of the information, when searching for it, you may see a duplicate that should be merged into your edition — in that case, it's still super helpful to file a ticket!
Hope that's helpful and you can start on your journey to having accurate StoryGraph stats! :-D
Nadia Got it! Thank you so much!
I really love this site :)
schnaucl Awww, thank you so much!
