We have a nice notification system, but it seems to mainly (only?) be used for giveaway results so far. I think it would be cool to get notifications about a reading challenge you've joined ending soon/being halfway over or a reminder to update your streak if you haven't by 9:00 pm or something like that. Of course, with more notifications probably also comes more needs for notification settings so people can turn them off.

Yes, we'll definitely have more notifications (though they're also used for buddy reads, StoryGraph broadcasts, import book requests, wrap-up generation, friend requests/acceptances) and push notifications, with options to customise what you get notified for.
Some upcoming things will be similar to what you've suggested, new book notifications, in-app recommendations from friends, and more!
