Page Count for Non-books / Private "books"

I read a lot of scientific papers and articles, and I wish I could include these in the pages count.

I think that managing entries for non-standardazied formats would be way too much for the Librarians (until your API is ready to dance with CrossRef's?), but I think a possible solution would be to have a blank/custom book option that would not be publicly searchable that could count toward one's stats and goals. The book length could be measured in time (for audiobooks & podcasts), pages, or words (with either a standardized or customizable conversion to a pagenum).

I think this may be valuable for people who read daily periodical digests, and even more so for fan-fiction readers.

I’d love to be able to add fanfiction to my reading stats without creating a publicly searchable book. Many fanfic authors get mad about having their work added to book databases like Goodreads and The StoryGraph.

gosh, I completely agree with you. This is something I want. I do read a lot of articles and I also enjoy some reading apps such as Dreame and Inkitt, and Wattpad, etc. Some of the stories on there are ongoing. So there is no way to know exactly how many pages it will end up being or how long it would take to read until the end. I would like to be able to track my time spent reading these stories or articles as well. I am currently reading a story on Wattpad that is ongoing and is part of a series. Just to be able to track what I am reading I entered it into the library with very minimal information. Then I calculated how long I read it and converted it to pages and I just add total of pages read for the day. But doing this I have had to add the story to the library. I don't mind doing this because it will be available for others to use. But honestly, for articles and such that isn't going to be something I want to do. I just want a generic pages read log that I can put into daily without having to share what I am reading with others. This is such a great idea and I am amazed that not a lot of people have mentioned it.

Abbie, I’m specifically talking about reading material that does not exist in The Storygraph’s database, and probably should not exist outside of an individual user’s profile. That’s why I mention periodical digests and fan-fiction at the end; I’m thinking about niche content that is not likely to be read widely or have official publisher data, but may still be useful in someone’s personal stats.

For example, I own a copy of someone’s 800-page dissertation from the 1950s. I would like 800 to count toward my Pages Read stats, but I don’t want to add the dissertation as a “book” across the entire site because it is not a published work and would lack an ISBN. It would also be difficult for Librarians to independently verify any metadata without direct access to the paywalled file.

I am thinking of a truly private, custom user-specific option. A “create nonstandard book” option that allows you to input your own metadata for statistical purposes and does not interfere with real books on the site.

I recognize that this is a bit of fringe case, but my personal dream is to track everything I’ve read.

If you like, I added a book to use to add my reading articles etc. It is generic and I added all of the genres. I didn't list if it was fiction or non fiction. It is called Private by Self. It may be someplace you can log what you need until they come up with something.

Hi Abbie, How do you mark it as "read" if it's not a book. I'm a bit confused about the workaround!

That's a good point, thank you for bringing it up! I agree that for now it would be too much to expect our librarians to work out what the pages would be. But if you have worked it out yourself, there is a workaround you could use.

Once it's marked as read, go to View/edit read history > View journal entries and click on the one that says Finished. Hit edit and then in the 'Pages Read in Last Sitting' and 'Pages read total' boxes, input how many pages you've worked it out to be. Those pages won't show up anywhere but in your page stats. :-)
