Ultimately, the streak is ultimately calculated from the journal entries! But you do need evidence of some pages being read, i.e. the journal entry has to have something in the "pages read" (or "minutes listened") field. And because of the streak mechanics and performance considerations, we only calculate back a couple time periods, but you can always click the "recalculate streak" button on the streak page if you're logging back further than that.
